The 2013 IZOD IndyCar season commenced 2 weeks ago. This season will consist of 19 races, which includes 6 oval races and 13 road/street races.
The first race took place on the Streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. Penske driver Will Power led early on, but had pitstop issues late in the race, which saw James Hinchcliffe capture his first win in the IndyCar series over 2nd place driver Helio Castroneves, who won the event in 2012.
During the offseason, there were many driver moves as Takuma Sato now drives for A.J. Foyt. Rubens Barrichello left the series to drive in a Brazilian series. KV Racing sees Tony Kanaan paired up with former HVM driver Simona de Silvestro, who impressed at St. Pete, driving in the top-5 for majority of the race, finishing 6th. Ryan Briscoe lost his Penske Racing ride, and looks to race in the American Le Mans series. E.J. Viso joined Andretti Autosport and joins teammates Hinchcliffe, 2012 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay & Marco Andretti.
With 1 race down, the IndyCar series next goes to Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama for a 90 lap event that will take place on Sunday, followed by Long Beach, Sao Paulo & the Indy 500. After the prestigious late-May event, the series will go to Detroit, for 2 races, 1 on Saturday, the other on Sunday. This will be the 1st of 3 doubleheader weekends which also include races in Toronto & Houston. The race-format will be the same each day, except 1 race will feature a standing-start, the other a rolling start. Other road/street courses include Mid-Ohio, Sonoma & Baltimore. The series also returns to Pocono after a lengthy absence, Iowa, Texas and finishing the season at Auto Club Speedway for a 500 mile/250 lap event.
I'm taking Hinchcliffe to win the championship, but look for Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Dario Franchitti & Tony Kanaan to also have good years as well.
