Throughout the first 4 races, we've seen plenty of excitement out west in Phoenix & Vegas, as well as long rain-delays which caused for night races in Daytona & Bristol. With that to say, this has been so far a great 2014 NASCAR season.
Sunday night's race in Bristol was competitive and whoever led laps had car issues. Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth all led laps and all were involved in crashes or tire blowouts during the course of the Food City 500. With a 3-hour plus rain delay on Lap 125, the race shifted to nighttime conditions and drivers raced the rain and the distance. On Lap 426, Carl Edwards, as well as Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Aric Almirola and other drivers stayed out while the leaders at the time (including Harvick) went to pit road. With a few more cautions that ensued, including a lights malfunction, Edwards was able to hold off the 17 and 43 for the win and a lock into the Chase. Tony Stewart, still recovering from injury, finished 4th and Marcos Ambrose 5th. A great day for Richard Petty Motorsports as well as Roush-Fenway Racing definitely showed that Fords are a powerhouse in 2014. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who finished in the top-2 in the first 3 races, finished 29th, 4 laps down and loses the points lead to Vegas winner Brad Keselowski who leads by 10 points. The series heads back west to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA for the Auto Club 400 on Sunday.
FORMULA ONE
I didn't do a 2014 F1 preview. I should've though, especially with all the new rules in place regarding engines (new 1.6 litre turbo, replaces the 2.4 version), fuel, weight, car numbers, etc. The season-opening race in Melbourne, Australia, definitely showed that this season will be no other like before, very competitive. Nico Rosberg beat out teammate Lewis Hamilton on the first turn of the first lap, dominated the race and won the Australian Grand Prix. Hamilton and 4-time defending series champion Sebastian Vettel retired from the race early due to engine issues, which can plague drivers early on (in 2014, engines are limited and excepted to last 6 Grand Prixs). Meanwhile, Vettel's teammate Daniel Ricciardo originally finished 2nd, but was disqualified due to his car's ran too high with a fuel flow rate during the race. Instead, MacLaren driver and rookie Kevin Magnussen (son of Corvette driver Jan Magnussen) finished 2nd and his teammate Jenson Button finished 3rd. The next round will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on March 30th.
