Well, it's the dog days of summer and the NASCAR season is just heating up! There are only 4 races left until the Chase for the Sprint Cup and the dash to the finish begins Saturday night under the lights of Bristol Motor Speedway. There are only 4 more opportunities for drivers like Kyle Larson, Ryan Newman, AJ Allmendinger, Austin Dillon & Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (if he returns from concussion symptoms before Richmond) to earn a win and a spot in the 2016 Chase.
When I last wrote which seemed like an enternity, we saw Kyle Busch dominate Indianapolis, Chris Buescher gamble to win at foggy/rainy Pocono and Denny Hamlin earn his first road-course win at Watkins Glen.
Now, it's time for drivers who need to win, well...to win. We have a 1/2 mile track in Bristol, then a super-fast 2 mile Michigan track, then the traditional Labor Day Darlington showdown, and finally the short track beating and banging down in Richmond, which all sets up the 10-race Chase.
So far, 11 drivers are officially locked into the Chase; Brad Keselowski & Kyle Busch (4 wins), Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth & Jimmie Johnson (2 wins) and Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, Martin Truex, Jr., and Tony Stewart each have a win. Even though Chris Buescher won at Pocono, he is still outside the Top-30 in Points, and will need help over the last 4 races to earn a spot. So, without Buescher, there are 5 spots left, and they will go to driver points standings, which at this point will be Larson, Newman, Dillon, Jamie McMurray & Chase Elliott. Again, it's going to be a wild ride. Bristol is not a place to relax...not for 500 laps.
