Race 3 of 36 in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series goes to Jimmie Johnson who wins the Shelby American at Las Vegas. Switching back-and-forth between the USA/Canada hockey game and the race, the latter in my opinion was boring. Jeff Gordon led 218 of 267 laps, which broke a record of number of laps led at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, previously was 154. Gordon had the car to beat all day but it came down to the last pit stops during a caution caused by Kevin Conway's spin. Gordon's crew-chief Steve LeTarde called for 2 tire change which Chad Knaus put 4 tires on Johnson (at the time, Harvick and Stewart also went for 4 tires). 17 Laps to go, Johnson passed Gordon and never looked back to win his 49th career race and 4th at LVMS.
Few other things in my opinion to mention:
1) NASCAR needs to do something with these start-and-park drivers like Almirola or Michael McDowell because they are ruining the sport and lacking competition. I know that some of these teams don't have a lot of money but give other drivers a chance like Casey Mears who looked good in practice but failed to qualify by going slow, plus owner points play a factor. Oh well, we'll see what happens in future races.
2) Danica-mania is over for 4 months as she returns to the IndyCar series (yes I'll be posting recaps of F1 and IRL races too). Danica finished 36th after she crashed with Michael McDowell midway through the Nationwide race Saturday. She struggled but was able to run her line but a wreck ended it. I believe that she will do better later in the year after the IRL season ends. She finished 6th in the ARCA series, but with 2 DNFs and 3 laps down in the California race, it will take her a lot of time for her to get used to stock-cars but she will be comfortable eventually. Good luck to her in the IZOD IndyCar Series.
Next week, the Cup and Truck series heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway and those races will be fast and surely exciting.
