After a somewhat clean Talladega race which saw Joey Logano win and 4 more drivers including Dale Earnhardt, Jr. eliminated from the 2015 Chase for the Sprint Cup, the field was set to 8. Jeff Gordon won an emotional Martinsville race (9th career on the short track) and Jimmie Johnson won at Texas, passing dominating race-leader Brad Keselowski with 4 laps to go to win. That leaves us with 1 more race to determine which 4 drivers will race for the Championship next weekend in Homestead, FL. This race comes Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.
With Jeff Gordon already locking his spot into the Championship race, there are 3 spots open. Kyle Busch is 2nd in points, will clinch a spot with a 3rd place finish or better with a win, 4th place finish with at least one lap led and a 5th place finish w/ most laps led. Kevin Harvick will cinch a spot with a 2nd place finish or a win, 3rd place finish & at least a lap led and/or a 4th place finish or better and leads the most laps. The other drivers eligible: Martin Truex, Jr., Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch control their own destiny with a victory. Joey Logano, who won the 3 races in the Contender round, was intentionally wrecked by Matt Kenseth in Martinsville and spun out at Texas, causing over 65 laps lost, needs a win at Phoenix to advance.
Phoenix is a 1-mile track, but also a short race, so the fighting will happen early and all race, so with 7 drivers competing for 3 Chase spots, it will be an exciting, eventful race in the desert.
FORMULA ONE
After an exciting return to Mexico City for the Mexican Grand Prix, there are only 2 races left in the 2015 season. With Lewis Hamilton winning the Championship and Mercedes winning the manufacturers title, the last 2 races will be bragging rights and points for money, as well as getting ready for the 2016 season. The series resumes this weekend for the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo.
